The goat eats a class of fodder on which other animals would starve and for that reason, goat rearing is followed as an occupation by a large section of small holders and landless labourers in rural areas. A goat provides a dependable source of income to 40 percent of the rural population below the poverty line in India and two many who do not possess any land.
