Raphael's invitation to Rome and Michael-angelo's engagement to paint the Sixtine Chapel, are now considered to have been contemporary events, but we know less of the causes which led to the first than of the reasons which produced the second. It was an accident which separated Michaelangelo from Raphael at Florence. An accident brought them together at Rome. The circumstances under which they lived in each capital were very different.
